There are essentially two kinds of books on process serving, those that sell opportunity and those that sell education. The references listed below fall into the education category. They are the cream of the available crop and provide the basic tools one needs to become a successful process server.

ARIZONA

Arizona Process Servers Training Manual. Prepared and published by the Arizona Process Servers Association (APSA). All the basics are here in one volume. It covers the Arizona Rules of Civil Procedure and the Arizona Revised Statutes pertaining to the service of process and provides informative case law notations on specific rules. Included in the manual is an application packet of detailed information (and forms) for the person who is considering obtaining court approval as a private process server.

This 16-page syllabus, prepared by Andy Estin as a handout in conjunction with his roundtable discussion at the 2003 NAPPS Seminar, is an excellent overview of the essential California Codes on the various methods of service. The Professional Process Server's Guide to Service of Process in New Jersey, by John Perez, Esquire. This 100+ page bound book, written by a NAPPS member who is also a New Jersey lawyer, is an essential reference for anyone who serves process in New Jersey. The book is well organized and explains the New Jersey court system and relevant rules of procedure in great detail. The guide is distributed exclusively by the New Jersey Professional Process Servers Association at its seminars on "How to Serve New Jersey Civil Process". WASHINGTON

Process Servers Handbook, published by WSPSA (Washington State Process Servers Association). This book, originally published in 1991, is the work of WSPSA members Gary Turpen and Gary Ramey and Washington attorney David P. Tracy. It is well-researched and the authors do an excellent job of using case decisions to explain the meaning of statutory language .
